Don't let your guard down
Weapons are no good with nothing to kill. Don't worry, the aliens Gordon let into the lab
will be sufficient targets. From the chum toad to the Tentacle, all monsters in Half-Life are
unique and deadly (well, maybe not the chum toad as much).
The coolest enemy I ever saw in any game of any genre was definitely the tentacle in
Half-Life. This half plant half animal creature is extremely deadly and can kill without
warning in seconds. It looks like a big plant with blades on it. If anything near it makes a
sound it attacks, crushing it in seconds. I saw it in action at E3, and this thing was
amazing. Gordon walked into a room with a scientist looking through a large window. Then one
arm of the tentacle came crashing through, knocking the scientist against the wall and out
cold. Then it proceeded to grab the scientist back out the window. As the player walked
through where all this took place he turned and shot at it. He went through a door just
before the tentacle had him suffer the same fate as the scientist. But once through the door,
he was in the same room as it. He shot at it once and it crushed him.
Then of course there is the snark. I did not see this at E3 but have heard a lot about it.
It is a small creature that can be used as a weapon. Sort of like a grenade, you catch it,
and throw it at someone. It is extremely hyper and will run around them biting them all over
:) If there is no enemy around, it will come after you. It will even bite your fingers if
you keep it in your hand for too long.
That is just a small taste of what the creatures will be like in Half-Life. Their attributes
are not the only cool things about them though. These monsters are SMART. Their AI is
amazing. They are the first monsters in a first person shooter to ever try to stay alive.
They will assess how much health you might have and what the odds of beating you are. Then
based on those checks, they will decide whether to attack or not. If they attack, you better
run, but you can't hide. These monsters can smell you and will find you. You can hide in the
shadows, but don't make a sound, because they can also hear you. Combine this with their pack
hunting capabilities, and you better be pretty damn good, or you're dead. Valve made a great
decision when making the Half-Life AI. Instead of just making them able to kill you in a
second, they made it fun to fight the monsters.
