tutorial overview

This tutorial will take you through the steps needed to construct your first level. It takes you through seven stages.

Stage 1 - The First Room

The easiest and possibly most important step in learning to make maps is your first room. This gives you a bit of background and walks you through the construction of a room with light (definitely not a room with a view, however).

Stage 2 - Connecting Rooms

Here you'll see how to join two rooms with a short section of hallway.

Stage 3 - Texturing

We'll explore some methods of placing textures in your levels.

Stage 4 - Using Light

Light is one of the most important elements in a map. Some lighting methods are discussed here.

Stage 5 - Detailing Your Level

Here you'll see how to add detail to your level.

Stage 6 - Adding Monsters and NPCs

Ah, the spice of life. Populating your levels with Nasties and Not-So-Nasties.

Stage 7 - The Final Word

This is a small essay on the philosophy of map design. It is mostly in reference to single player/coop levels

This tutorial by no means attempts to cover every aspect of map design. What it does do is set you along on the course to discover everything you'll need.
